University Avenue. The 2-mile stretch of University Avenue in Berkeley runs from Marina District and the shore of the San Francisco Bay to the UC Berkeley campus and is lined with interesting shops and enticing restaurants. The Marina area of Berkeley is called "The Gateway to Berkeley" and offers spectacular views of the San Francisco Skyline. Heading east on University Avenue, you’ll dead end on the University of California Berkeley campus. Solano Avenue is the site of great north Berkeley shopping. Solano Avenue is one of Berkeley’s premier shopping and restaurants areas and runs along the north end of the city from east to west. Early in Berkeley’s history, Solano was a bustling business district. After the earthquake of 1906, the area was developed thanks to the Southern Pacific Railway station that connected Thousand Oaks in Berkeley with Oakland. Today, tree-lined Solano Avenue, sometimes known as the Solano stroll, is home to more than 150 shops, two theaters and 80 restaurants and offers plentiful and convenient parking.
