UC Berkeley History. Established in 1868, the University of California, Berkeley counts more than 60 Nobel Laureates among its staff of researches, professors and alumni. UC Berkeley Athletics. UC Berkeley athletics count championship basketball, rugby baseball, crew, track and field and volleyball teams among the 27 varsity athletic programs offered at the school.
